In the summer of 2024, our specially constructed flooring blocks arrived, ready to be laid over the limestone base. This method of a solid concrete flooring is to protect the delicate woodland ecosystem, allowing small animals to pass through while avoiding soil contamination.
However, this decision came with a trade-off. Without the thermal mass of concrete, maintaining a stable temperature inside the house would be more challenging, increasing energy demands for heating. This made achieving a net-zero carbon footprint more difficult, but sustainability is about balance—sometimes, protecting the land beneath our feet is just as important as reducing energy use.
Follow along as we navigate these challenges and continue our journey toward an eco-friendly home in the Lakes!
